Gretchen Eichberger: Music

Pretty Little Horses

(Southern Plantation Song)
Why does every girl have a thing for horses?

Hush a bye
Don't you cry
Go to sleepy little baby
When you wake
You shall have
all the pretty little horses

Blacks and bays
Dapples and grays
coach a six a little horses.

Hobo's Lullaby

(Goebel Reeves)
I think my Grandpa would have really appreciated this song. He was a bit of a hobo himself.

Go to sleepy you weary hobo.
Let the towns drift slowly by.
Can't you hear the steel rails hummin?
That's the hobo's lullaby.

I know your clothes are torn and tattered, and your hair is turning gray.
Lift your head and smile at trouble.
You'll find peace and rest someday.

Don't you worry bout tomorrow. let tomorrow come and go.
Tonight you're in your nice warm boxcar. Safe from all the wind and snow.

I know the police they give you trouble. They cause trouble everywhere. When you die you''ll go to heaven. They'll be no policemen there.

Family Bed

(Gretchen Eichberger)
i wrote this song on Beaver Island, a very quirky but beautiful island in the north end of Lake Michigan.
If you ever go to Beaver Island, go to Protar's house and watch for fairies. Visit the Toy Shop, and if you're there in late summer, pick antique apples.

Softly whimper, turn and rise,
almost forgot mama's lullabies.

Look for daddy sound asleepy, arm over mama, dreaming deep.

call out once, call out twice, hands reach out, feel so nice.

Cuddle and coo, kiss and love, fit with mama, like a glove.

Drift away, not so sleepy, feeling happy.

One big bed, room for three, full of love, all for me.

Goodnight Little Gwen

(Gretchen Eichberger/Attributed to Woody Guthrie)

Family Bed

(Gretchen Eichberger)
Drift away
not so sleepy...
feeling happy

one big bed
room for three
full of love
all for me.

Of A Strange Lands And People

(Gretchen Eichberger/Robert Schumann)

Raisins and Almonds

(Hebrew Folk Song)
I love Yiddish music. This gentle tune is captivating.

To my little one's cradle in the night.

Comes a little goat snowy and white.

The goat will trot to the market.

While mother watch does keep.

Bringing back raisins and almonds, sleep my little one, sleep.

Baby's Bed's a Silver Moon

(Gretchen Eichberger)
Baby's Bed's a silver moon.
Sailing oe'r the sky.
Sailing oe'r the sea of sleep, while the starts float by.

Sail, baby, sail.
Far across the sea.
Only don't forget to come,
back again to me.

Baby's fishing for a dream
Fishing near and far.
Her line a silver moonbeam is
Her bait a silver star.

Sail, baby, sail
far across the sea.
Only don't forget to come, back again to me.
